Ruby character study -- her end game

Dean hmm
This post is from let me say I love you tumblr .  The tags that developed over the reblogging of this post made me wonder if we were watching the same show. After reading their tags, I had to post my own reply. I don't really care if I anger anyone with  my opinion but I can't believe they saw her character as anything but a manipulative demon.

rubysboobies:

 #look how affectionate she is

#ruby loved sam #end of story

#in her own way she was trying to save him too

#ruby never wanted to screw over the Winchesters#either of them #the world she imagined making probably had a safer place for them than the real one ever did #they would have been the protected; the favored; safe and sound in Lucifer’s palace #remember when Meg told Cas they were going to Heaven? #that’s what Ruby wanted #and she would have brought the Winchester boys with her #but of course that’s impossible in so many ways and for so many reasons and it breaks my fucking heart for her

Really tumblr?

Ruby played the Winchesters from the beginning. In No Rest for the Wicked, she says as much to Sam. "Manipulative is in the job description." Like Lucifer, Ruby says she won't lie to him. However, she doesn't tell Sam how to defeat Lilith in season 3 because there is no way Dean would allow Sam to use the demon blood. She had to get rid of Dean. The best way to get Sam on her side is to act like she's trying to save Dean. Her plan all along was to be the one to free Lucifer from the cage. SHE'S GLOATING!

From transcript on SuperWiki:

Ruby:You don't even know how hard this was! All the demons out for my head. No one knew. I was the best of those sons of bitches! The most loyal! Not even Alistair knew! Only Lilith! Yeah, I'm sure you're a
little angry right now, But, I mean, come on, Sam! Even you have to admit -- I'm -- I'm awesome!

SAM You bitch. You lying bitch!
RUBY: Don't hurt yourself, Sammy. It's useless. You shot your payload on the boss.

SAM: The blood... You poisoned me.

RUBY: No. It wasn't the blood. It was you... and your choices. I just gave you the options, and you chose the right path every time. You didn't need the feather to fly, you had it in you the whole time, Dumbo! I know it's hard to see it now... but this is a miracle. So long coming. Everything Azazel did, and Lilith did. Just to get you here. And you were the only one who could do it.

She doesn't love Sam, she never did. She doesn't hope to save them. She used them, then gloated.

Thanks for the lolz. I really needed that. *shakes head* Seriously? I'm all for multi-layered bad guys, but Ruby was about as straightforward evil as it gets.

From the very beginning in Season 3 Ruby was playing her cards perfectly. to get Sam to trust her so that when Dean was gone she could manipulate him into doing EXACTLY what she needed him to do. She saved Dean in 'Malleus Maleficarum,' she let them boys think she would have sacrificed herself in 'Jus in Bello.' She was never going to do that, her whole thing in that episode, I think, was more of a test to see where Sam was, and what he was willing to do - and given that Sam seemed willing to sacrifice the girl, he was well on his way to the person Ruby needed him to be. All during S3 she behaved in a way to get Sam to believe that she was on their side. Dean was never completely trusting of her, for good reason, but Sam was the one losing Dean, he was the more vulnerable one, just perfect for the picking. She put the hunger for revenge in Sam and then once Dean was dead and in Hell, Sam was the perfect lonely, broken, soul - ripe to be further manipulated to do her bidding, and make him think it was all his idea.

You are right, Ruby never loved Sam and she used him, manipulated him in every way imaginable, and Sam did walk right through the doors she opened. Sam was so desperate for revenge and as he said in 'Fallen Idol', to not feel like the "little brother" that he was willing to do most anything. Ruby saw that and exploited it completely. And in the end, she was gloating, she was victorious. Thank goodness for Dean to the rescue to kill the bitch. Never was I more happy than to see her get killed.

And as Fritz stated in 'The Real Ghostbusters' - Ruby was obviously manipulating Sam into some kind of moral lapse, so why couldn't Dean and Sam tell Ruby was evil? I think Dean sensed it and continued to warn Sam to not trust her. Sam wouldn't listen, and when Dean was in Hell, Sam needed something to hold on to, and unfortunately, he chose Ruby.

well, no. I think Ruby was a sincere demon. I believe that she played them from the beginning, and that she was in league with Lucifer. OBVIOUSLY, YES. But also!

A sincere demon has very little to hope for in existence. The only thing she can hope for is to make the world, our world that is, cozier for demons. She wants to bring about the reign of Lucifer and get out of hell.

I don't, therefore, believe that Ruby is primarily sadistic. (I do see Meg as sadistic -- she enjoys watching people suffer). I think that Ruby is primarily, weirdly enough, optimistic -- she played the long game -- she fooled Alistair -- she fooled EVERYBODY -- and I kind of think that she saw something in Sam that she liked, beyond the fact that he would open Hell's gate. Maybe it was just the way that Sam was designed by the Angels, to be Lucifer's perfect vessel -- maybe that affinity that Sam bears to Lucifer, attracted Ruby. But I never thought she hated him. She manipulated him to get what she wanted.

F*YEAH RUBY! as we used to say. :)

Whoever is on tumbler is smoking crack. Ruby loathed Dean and saw him only as an obstacle to her goal. She probably was thrilled he was being tortured into becoming something like her then disappointed he came back.

As for the world, she loved its comforts and probably didn't want it to degenerate like it did in 2014 but she really couldn't give a damn about the people, just the fries.

I think it's Meg who wanted to go to Heaven but it's Ruby who expected gratitude so she probably thought she'd be rewarded by becoming Queen of whatever country she wanted.

With Sam, it's a little more tricky. If she knew about the vessel thing then any and all displays of affection were completey and utterly fake. If she didn't, she may have thought Sam had fully degenerated into something like her and would be also rewarded. At most, she likes him as much as you love a winning lottery ticket: not for itself but for what it can get you. It must be stressed over and over again the Lucifer (and by extension, herself) totally and utterly trumped Sam. If Sam had to be stuffed into a wood chipper for Luci then she would gladly have done it.

>>Ruby loathed Dean and saw him only as an obstacle to her goal.<<

Ruby only loathed Dean because he saw through her and wanted her dead. If he'd been oblivious like Sam she wouldn't have cared.

Plus she was, I imagine, told that Dean had to go to Hell to break the first Seal. Apparently only the Winchesters and their allies and Castiel were unaware that Dean both was the First Seal and had to break it. And she was probably told to do her part to pound home to him that the was going to go to Hell so as to help break him down.

Oh, that was pure gloating at the end, with some modest bragging thrown in as well

Eh...I've come across some fic and some speculation that has Ruby on the Winchesters' side until Lilith 'captures' her at the end of s3, but even that, I think is overly generous. After all, Ruby1.0 did tell Dean flat out that she couldn't get him out of his deal and that he would become a demon...carefully out of sight of Sam and while at the same time perpetuating Sam's belief that Ruby could 'help' him save his brother. Considering we have continuity from s1 to things that happened in s4, I very much doubt there was a time when Ruby wasn't a conniving bitch.

While Ruby, like Meg, may have believed she and the other demons were 'going to Heaven,' I seriously doubt she had any intention of protecting the Winchesters and bringing them with her, even if she had no idea of Sam's role as a vessel.

I think that people like to romanticise Ruby because the actress that, ultimately, played her married 'Sam' in real life.

Some fans have a lot of problems sifting fiction from reality and look at Genevieve and Jared and think that it is all part of the big 'Sam loves Ruby' arc (which never existed). Jared - as much as I love him - perpetuates this with senerios at cons when he claims that Sam wanted to run away in the Impala with Ruby and that Ruby is his fave character. Jared is not Sam - Gen is not Ruby - the fictional Ruby was a manipulative bitch who played Sam from start to finish - there was lust sure - but love pah!

Oh, I think Ruby is fond of Sam in the same way a butcher is fond of their favourite knife. She had been sincere when she claimed that Sam was going to be rewarded beyond belief, 'cause I guess it's the ultimate honor and reward to be worn by the devil.

So, I think Ruby loved Sam in her own twisted sort of way; but not in the way regular people would have.
